the NEIGHBORHOOD
I found this neighborhood long before we made the move to NC. Google maps became my tool of obsession. I couldn't be sure, but it looked like all the roofs were cedar shingles and the curbs were brick. When I finally had the chance to drive through it--it was like driving through Colonial Williamsburg--small home sites close to the street and each other, alleyways that hide the garages, picket fences, the works. My Mecca. I knew that this was it. I had never seen a neighborhood like it. I started working on my husband... he had always been attracted to acreage. Drop a house in the middle of the woods/on the side of a mountain and he would be happy. So I began the hard sell. "See Phillip, this is the only neighborhood that has been authorized by the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Foundation to replicate the historic homes of the colonial village." --nerd-- "See, William Poole is the architect." "Who needs a big yard when you have all these nature trails?" Honestly, I think the golf course across the street had him at hello, I was just spinning my wheels. I waited and watched, as a handful of homes came on the market and promptly sold. We were renting and couldn't make any offers till we had lived in NC for a year. Right before our lease was up, a home was listed. A home modeled after the Charlton House in Colonial Williamsburg--my dream home. Long story short, we put in an offer, prayed, worried, wanted, and were lucky enough to get it! I have big plans for this little house...
